What Is Parquet Polishing

Parquet polishing vs. parquet repair — what's the difference?

Parquet polishing is a surface treatment: sanding down the existing finish to remove scratches, dullness and light stains, then applying fresh varnish to restore shine and protection. It doesn't replace any wood — it renews the surface. It's the right service when your floor's structure is sound but the finish has dulled, yellowed, or picked up years of surface scratches from daily foot traffic and sun exposure.

If blocks are loose, water damaged, termite-affected or physically broken, that's parquet repair territory — polishing alone won't fix structural problems, though most jobs combine both: repair what's broken, then polish the whole floor for an even finish.

The Process

How parquet floor polishing works

  • Inspection. We check the floor's condition, how many times it's already been sanded (parquet can typically only be sanded 3–5 times in its lifespan before the wear layer runs out), and whether any repairs are needed first.
  • Dust-free sanding. Vacuum-attached sanding equipment strips the old finish back to bare wood evenly across the floor, capturing dust as it's created rather than spreading it through your home.
  • Staining (optional). If you want to refresh or change the floor's tone, staining happens after sanding and before varnish.
  • Varnishing. Multiple coats of water-based or oil-based varnish are applied and buffed between coats, finished in matte, satin, or gloss.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does parquet polishing cost in Singapore?

Parquet polishing usually costs SGD $1.40 to $3.00 per square foot, depending on floor condition, varnish type, and project size. For a standard 3-room HDB flat, that's typically $1,000–$2,000 for a full polish.

How long does parquet polishing take?

Most residential parquet polishing jobs take 1–2 days, including drying and curing time between varnish coats. Larger units may take longer.

Can parquet be polished more than once?

Yes, but a limited number of times — a solid parquet floor can typically be sanded and polished 3 to 5 times over its lifespan before there isn't enough wood left to sand safely.

Is parquet polishing the same as parquet repair?

No. Polishing is a surface treatment for a structurally sound floor that just looks dull or scratched. Repair addresses actual damage — loose blocks, water damage, termite damage, cracks — and often happens before polishing on a damaged floor.
